Allowing Kindess to Sink In

by Robin on July 5, 2010

I have a big birthday approaching and it seems as though every day a very nice surprise comes as a result.  My mom and my aunt Linda arrived for a little backyard party and did an unbelievable makeover on my back yard.  My in laws arrived on Sunday and managed to help me tame and beautify a front garden jungle, is it unrealistic of me to have been hoping that a family of monkeys might have moved in?

Today a card arrived from my step mother and I read it and thought awww, to myself and then got ready to set it down somewhere.  But then I read it again, actually read it and now I thought I would pay some extra attention to the extra attention I’m getting (which sometimes makes me feel pretty shy) and let it really sink in.

The card says

Happy Birthday Robin

Thinking of you and feeling grateful you’re in the world…making it kinder, a little nicer and a lot more wonderful.

Awww, blush, thank you…thank you…thank you…

May you let something wonderful sink in today; accept a kind word, a gift, a thoughtful gesture and just accept it and say Thanks and know you deserve it!

The Worst Advice

by Robin on June 29, 2010

Just when I think that I’ve heard the worst business advice from coaches who coach coaches, I hear one that makes my hair curl.   I’m not anti business, although trained as a counsellor I have a lot of interest in entreprenership and the principles of running a business that is congruent with my own values. I’m kind of a marketing geek, I find it fun but the people I work with need to market in a way that is really in line with who they are and what they believe.

From my perspective a lot of coaching coaches is about telling people what they want to hear; like quit your job, or raise your fees, or make a client make a committement on the phone, the list goes on….but today I was listening to a webinar and heard the WORST most unethical piece of advice I have ever heard given to an up and coming coaching professional.

A woman asked the well known coach if she could only afford to buy one of his products, because she had already spent ALL of her money and maxed out all but one credit card, should she buy the Coaching program (i.e. learning the skills of coaching) or should she buy the program about how to sell a client on her services.  He said to her, buy the product to learn how to sell someone on your services and then when you have his money learn how to be a coach!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you friggen kidding me?  Wow.  I mean I really liked my coaching program at Erickson College but never have I been so grateful for their ethical and comprehensive approach to working with clients.  Thank you to Marilyn and the gang for never forgetting that the work is about the client; their needs; wishes and desires; not about the coaches need for making more money in less time. www.erickson.edu

In the coming weeks and months Francoise (www.compassionfatigue.ca) and myself are going to put together more resources for people who want to run values based businesses.  There is no need to starve or not be paid well for the good work you do, but people, let’s not forget that this is supposed to be about THEM right? www.dreambigstartsmall.com

O.k. this is kind of a rant, but I hadn’t written for a while and was inspired today.

We’re going to need a bigger boat!

by Robin on May 13, 2010

Hello from beautiful Charlottetown, PEI, a quick post for those of you who attended or tried to attend my workshop at the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Associations 45th Annual Conference.  It was called Dreaming Big Starting Small; practical strategies for getting your private practice up and running.

I was thinking there would be about 15 of you, I made 30 handouts just in case and there were 50 of you at my last count.  Thank you for bearing the heat and for those of you who didn’t have a place to sit and didn’t get a hand out I want to make it up to you by providing you with the workbook.  There are two ways to get a copy of the workbook; send me an email robin@lifeinspired.ca or sign up for the newsletter at www.dreambigstartsmall.com and you will also receive other resources as we get them finished.

WE?  While not quite an official launch, I’m standing at a tiny table as the internet cable won’t reach the bed or a place to sit down; BUT I am thrilled to announce that I managed to talk my former business partner and private practice diva Francoise Mathieu into playing with me again.  We are putting together more resources for those of you who have been asking for help with your private practices or workshop businesses.  If  you are interested please see www.dreambigstartsmall.com.  Isn’t it time to get that dusty dream off the shelf!

Again thank you for attending yesterday I had a great time.  R

Inspired by…in 2008

by Robin on January 8, 2009

May 2009 be the year that you move more closely to your best self, your most cherished goals, your highest hopes.  There were so many things about 2008 that inspired me but seeing Tina Turner rock at the ACC centre on December 12th is the best way I can think of to sum up a year of energy, change and challenge.

Turning 69 prior to this concert I couldn’t help but watch her in wonder and think; at more than 20 years her junior if I hadn’t been at the concert I might have already changed into my pyjamas.  Watching her reminded me that it is never too late to make a dream come true.  O.K. this doesn’t necissarily mean I’ll be dancing with the National Ballet (unless they wanted to make a blooper show), but there are creative and inspired ways I can let my goals grow and change to fit my current life and loves.  Enhance your chances of making dreams come true by expanding them, altering them, making them more realistic, but not giving up on them.  Let’s be creative and find ways to ”lean into” our goals as Jack Canfield writes in his book  The Success Principles

This could be your year to do what scares you, to move past the things that have held you back.

“I will never give in to old age until I become old. And I’m not old yet!” -Tina Turner

21 Day Challenge Day 10: Organize it

by Robin on November 20, 2008

“Everything in the world must have design or the human mind rejects it. But in addition it must have purpose or the human conscience shies away from it.” John Steinbeck, Travels With Charley

Do you ever start a project just to find that the project itself seems to grow as you work?  I’m one of those people who gets really inspired and pulls everything from drawers and closets and puts it all in one big pile.  I feel strong and powerful as I set out to organize all that falls into my path.  Well, this is true until all the “unpacking” is finished.  As it looms, every other task on my to-do list seems more interesting and important.  I putter around uselessly, picking up things and putting them down or noticing that the windows could really be washed.  I know it is almost all over when I begin to dream that someone from one of those organizing shows will knock on my door and lead me through the overwhelming process that I’ve begun.  I sit defeated, surrounded by treasures, garbage, things that belong to other people and things I don’t even remember purchasing and no one comes to save me from myself.

If I’m feeling especially sharp I can even convince myself that organizing is overrated and that my disorganization is probably positively correlated to my productivity and creativity!

“One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.” A. A. Milne

While this can be exciting, being surprised about where my house keys are every day is a bit of a drag and a total waste of time and energy.  Clearly I’m no expert on de-cluttering so I won’t attempt to compete with the pros here but I have 2 strategies that are usually enough to get me going and keep me on task.  They might also serve you if you are procrastinating on your goal using cleaning or de-cluttering.  (I can’t write because my desk is a mess…sound familiar?)

1.  Hide the pile.  Seriously, most of us are very visual, so a huge pile of tax receipts, winter and summer clothes, office files or kitchen cupboards can be so un-motivating and intimidating that we just want to go back to bed.  So shove it all out of site and…

2.  Start small.  Choose to sort for one type of item.  Maybe you want to hunt in the big pile for clothes that can be given away, things that don’t belong in that room (put them all in a big laundry basket and put it out of site, just outside the door of the room you are working in).  You can pluck away at this over a few hours, or in shorter increments of time, and the pile will get smaller.  Really!

The benefit of the hide the pile strategy is that if you are really legitimately interrupted you have not left your home or office in a terrible state.  The drawback of the hide the pile strategy is that you might just forget about it all together.  But hey maybe that’s not so bad either.

“My theory on housework is, if the item doesn’t multiply, smell, catch fire, or block the refrigerator door, let it be. No one else cares, why should you?” Erma Bombeck

21 Day Challenge Day 9: What’s in a moment?

by Robin on November 19, 2008

“It’s frustrating to believe that peace is some distant goal attainable only by a few fortunate souls blessed with good genes, superior brain chemistry, plenty of money, or a calling as a monk.  But peace has not deserted even the crankiest and busiest among us.  The most basic fact about being human is that peace is in our own true nature, our fundamental state of mind.  There’s a Buddhist saying that peace is like a sun that’s always shining in your heart.  It’s just hidden behind clouds of fear, doubt, worry and desire that continually orient you toward the past or the future.  The sun comes out only when you’re in the present moment”.  Joan Borysenko “Inner Peace for Busy People”.

Inner Peace for Busy People

I’ll be with you in a moment, a moment on the lips a lifetime on the hips, moment to moment, wait a moment, take a moment, I need a moment; how can we make the most of our moments?

Walk on the sunny side

Life is made up of a collection of moments, while some moments are beyond your control; how those moments are strung together and interpreted is up to you.  Some days we think “everything went wrong” other days are interpreted as “good days”, the real truth is likely that both days had moments that make you want to go back to bed and moments that are neutral or good.  If you are really struggling, you might need to make small moments of kindness even more important, more powerful, the focus of more of your attention.  Focus on the flight attendant who was especially helpful rather than the character next to you who has confused a red eye flight with a sleazy pick up joint.  Think of how nice she was to you as he leers and flirts while spilling his 5th vodka and sticky cranberry juice on your only outfit as your luggage didn’t make the connection!

“When you feel crazy busy, try taking a breath, and let go of whatever is on your mind.  Think, here I am.  Let your body relax, and feel your connection to the larger whole.  This is not an easy task, but it becomes more and more possible with practice.  Here you are.  The possibilities for joy are all around you.  Joan Borysenko, “Inner Peace for Busy People”.

Yesterday my moment came from turning off the baby monitor for 2 minutes, which didn’t feel particularly zen or kind, but did feel necissary.  I know it can be hard, if you want some additional motivation try Joan’s book, she also has tapes.  Check her out at www.joanborysenko.comThe book I have used today as inpiration for this post is one of my favorites because it is written in 52 short chapters which is realistic for busy, tired people.

Too busy to read?  Try this little strategy all you have to do is count to 5

Take a deep breath in for 5 counts, hold it for 5 counts and let it out slowly for at least 5 counts.  Do this 5 times.

Thank you for taking a moment with me this morning.
